It seems that everyone has a to-do list that is a mile long these days. It can be overwhelming to be told that there are more things you need to get done before you go to bed each night, but some of them are especially important to your overall health and wellbeing. The good news is, you’re probably doing some form of at least one or two of them already.
Brush and Floss Your Teeth
You know you’re supposed to brush your teeth twice and floss once as a minimum every day. This is especially important to do before you go to bed. Saliva production decreases during sleep, which means you don’t spend the whole night swallowing spit, but that also puts your teeth at a greater risk for decay. That risk only increases if you fail to brush and floss before bed. Not doing so means the bacteria in your mouth will have all night long to produce plaque that can damage your teeth and turn into tartar. Make sure you brush and floss before bed to remove food particles and protect the health of your teeth.
Skin Care
Anyone who has ever worn makeup has probably heard that they should never go to bed before washing it off. It’s just bad news for your skin. You don’t need to be wearing makeup for washing your skin before bed to be a good thing for you, though. Regardless of your gender or make-up wearing habits, your skin will thank you for cleaning it before going to sleep. Your skin collects all kinds of debris throughout the day. Taking the time to shower and wash your face before bed helps keep your skin clean, clear, and healthy. Combine soaping off with a quick cleansing, toning, and moisturizing facial routine for simple, fast skin care.
Wind Down
How do you spend the time before bed? Are you browsing social media or trying to fit one more episode of a show in before you call it a night? If so, it’s time to rethink how you approach bed. Screen time before bed isn’t good for you. Instead, take some time to wind down and relax before bed in ways that don’t require screens. Do a short, 15 minute meditation practice, move through a nighttime yoga routine, or listen to relaxing music. Whatever you choose to do, make sure it’s something that helps you prepare for a restful night of sleep.
How you handle the hour or two leading up to bedtime can make a difference in your health and wellbeing. Make dental hygiene, skin care, and winding down a part of your daily bedtime routine. By making it a habit, you’ll teach your body when it’s time to go to bed so you can get better sleep each night. Now that’s something worth celebrating.
