Hearing the word “minimalism,” you think of neat, organized spaces that don’t have clutter. You’d be correct. However, this lifestyle is achievable and has plenty of advantages compared to living with messes all the time. As you dip your toes into the lifestyle, we have three ways to become a minimalist.

Set Up Your Own Rules

The first rule of minimalism is to set boundaries for yourself. For instance, a person might stick to a specific number of items in their wardrobe or only purchase furniture that fits a small space.

However, when you make these rules, ensure they’re practical, work for your lifestyle, and make you happy.

It’s Time To Hit Refresh

Now that you’re making the rules of your routine, it’s time to look through the closet, drawers, kitchen, and everywhere else from top to bottom. Then, after removing everything, focus on taking out broken and irreparable items first, and finally, move on to clothing and other things.

As you give yourself a clean slate, it’s time to start an organizational system that won’t cause future messes. So here are three rules to follow:

  1. You should have three sheets for every bed you have.
  2. Only keep two towels per person.
  3. Keep three mugs or cups for every person you live with.

Toss and Don’t Retrieve

Once you’ve gone through your entire living space, divide all items into groups. Then, sort through everything and only keep things you feel connected to and need to have.

So as you declutter each room in the home, make sure the items you toss aren’t ones you’re going to second guess. Never retrieve anything after throwing it away.

Ask Yourself Questions

While decluttering a room full of junk, feel free to question every decision. If anything, focus on every item you pick up based on its usage, how it makes you feel, and if you have more than one.

Use the answer to the questions to determine which pile it will go in.

After learning the ways to become a minimalist, remind yourself that it’s not always an easy transition. While changing your lifestyle, record your journey and share your experiences with others. Becoming a minimalist takes a while, so take your time with the process.
