How to Have a Safe and Stress-Free Road Trip

As summer comes to a close, more and more people around the country take to the roads to get in that last bit of adventure. The most popular of these adventures is the road trip. Road trips offer the opportunity to see more of this incredible country while saving a considerable amount of money. However, the logistics of a road trip can be a little stressful. Here are some of our best tips for having a safe and stress-free road trip.

Get Your Car Inspected Before Leaving

If you remember just one thing from this list, it should be this: Always make sure to get your car inspected before taking off on a road trip. You may think that your car runs pretty smoothly on your daily commute, but trips to the store and back are not stressful on your vehicle; driving hundreds of miles every day is. Equipment failures are involved in a high number of auto accidents and should be looked for prior to your trip. This will allow you to have plenty of time to fix any issues that your vehicle may have without compromising your road trip schedule.

Consult with Your Friends/Family

Attempting to see everything is going to rush you, and one of the biggest factors that ruin any vacation is trying to pack the schedule too full. Yes, there’s lots to do, and yes, it’s hard to narrow things down. But it’s important to reach that compromise in order for everyone to have a good time. So as you’re planning the trip, always consult with your friends or family about their desired locations and stops in order to create a detailed and efficient itinerary with something for everyone, without making it feel like a chore.

Plan Your Lodging

Driving on the open road and witnessing everything that nature has to offer is an incredible experience, but eventually, you’re going to need to stop to sleep, eat, and take a shower. Lodging must be planned ahead of time in order to make sure that you will always have a place to sleep for the night. The last thing you want is to have traveled out of your way to a hotel, only to find it fully booked for the night with nowhere else available — and sleeping in the car is far from a recipe for a good night’s sleep. If you’re traveling via RV, research ahead of time where it’s legal and where it’s not legal to park an RV overnight along your route. Only a few states allow travelers to park overnight; making this precaution extra important.

A road trip with friends or family is truly an experience everyone should have at some point in their life. However, it’s not something you can do spontaneously. The best road trips take careful planning and preparation. Keep the above tips in mind to reduce stress and make sure that everyone involved has a good time.
