Fashion design is one of my dream jobs, by the way, and I am excited to share these details with you about making a living in the fashion design career and have included some great steps to kickstart your glamorous fashion job!
The world of fashion design can be very exciting. Just so you are aware, becoming a fashion designer is one of the most creative and amazing jobs one could ever do. What are the two skills needed to be a good fashion designer? It is a must to know how to sew and do it very well. For this, I recommend a Project Runway Sewing Machine– it’s what I use and I love and enjoy it. That sewing machine is also very affordable. But if you want to be super serious about this, you could splurge on a very powerful industrial sewing machine which could cost a lot more but it is certainly worth it. Both options are beneficial for your career. It’s also necessary to know how to draw your ideas. Invest in a good quality sketchbook for when your ideas are flowing. Of course, the lessons needed for all that will be taught by experts when you enroll in a fashion school.
Besides the mentioned two mandatory skills, you will need to possess a lot of passion to be in fashion design: the passion for beautiful and stylish clothing and impeccable design. It would also help you to be a right-brained person because being a good fashion designer will require you to think outside the box and to avoid conformity. Creativity is definitely a must-have quality in the fashion world.
Other qualities and traits you need to have are determination and a comprehensive understanding of the fashion industry. You should have an excellent grasp of the creative side as well as the business side of having a career in the fashion business.
Your next step is to enroll in a fashion design program with a reputable fashion college. Going to fashion design school will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge in a structured setting. Professional designers will guide you in your journey to become a full-fledged fashion designer.
The next section is the Design Process. It is a core material of what they will teach you in Fashion School. The designing process leaders will teach you all you need to learn from the idea of your design to the creation of the garment.
The very first step in the Design Process is to choose your target market in which you think your designs will sell best. This is very important and you should know your targeted customer and what they are seeking. This means interviewing them so that you’ll understand their unique fashion needs and personal tastes.
Now is the part where you need to know the trends. Fashion is forever evolving and trending so it is most important to know what is in and what is not. If you infuse your creativity into what your market desires when it comes to style and fashion, you will create a successful design that will be loved and all the rage! How exciting is that?!
After you have a better idea of what your market wants, it’s time to choose the fabrics that you love the most and believe your customers will also love to wear. You must do this before you even start sketching your design because the design depends on the fabric you choose. Make sure the fabric you choose is what your target market loves.
The fabric you pick out is also dependent on the season you are targeting. It does not make sense to use wool for a summer season, for example.
So next, you need to sketch your design. By now, you will have a good idea of what your customer is looking for. You will also have determined what an ‘in style’ trend is for the season you are targeting.
It’s now time to unleash your creativity for the world to see. Your creativity has to be easily shown in the design you will sketch. After you have finished your sketch, you would then take some measurements. You can choose to customize it for each customer or you can go with the global size standards. If you are only dealing with a small number of clients, it’s best to give them a personalized service by taking their measurements personally. They will truly appreciate this.
You then draft your patterns. Then you should begin sewing the garments. For your test garment for fitting, you will be sewing muslin. The muslin will allow you to modify your patterns when needed. One of the best things about being a fashion designer is that you continually help people look good and that your creativity muscles are always being stretched. Treat your clients well and you’re on the glamorous road to a great career as a fashion designer!
